CLASSIC AUTOS - Drop the top, and we jump into a rush of the wind, so the entire city of Los Angeles is shown before us, feeling less concrete, more like a living thing of massive dimensions.
You're staring into the face of the sun, that faint hum of traffic around the car that still lingers, all of a sudden driving doesn't feel like such a drag for you. It becomes wild and untamed liberty.
I have obsessed with automobiles since childhood, period. And even to this day - if you’ve always enjoyed engines as your personal favorite or are drawn to metal with a genuine life in it - this metropolis knows exactly what it takes to rekindle that spark of driving happiness. Honestly, I have spent many weekends chasing that particular euphoria. So here’s the short version of what actually gets the goods - without making your day feel like one more sludge-fest on the freeway.
You definitely “must” go to the Petersen Automotive Museum, which is still one of the best spots in the entire region.
If you haven’t roamed those halls in a long time, believe me - seek the detours. Nestled along Wilshire Blvd, in the heart of Museum Row, it is home to arguably the best collection of rare and legendary automobiles you’ll find anywhere on the planet.
And guess what? To date, their short-term features are absolute fire.
Check out “A Fast & Furious Legacy: 25 Years of Automotive Icons” - it debuted March 14th, 2026 and runs to April 2027. We mean legitimate movie machinery, actual stunt cars, that captured the whole picture vibe.
Then there’s “The Wedge Revolution,” the richly written history included in “Performance & Prestige: A History of Aston Martin” and for the ultimate nostalgic hit, “Totally Awesome! Cars and Culture of the ‘80s and ‘90s.”
I lost an entire afternoon just wandering from one exhibit to another until finally getting to The Vault. This stuff is so much more than slick chrome, you can see from how these displays illustrate that cars shaped Hollywood, but also really the entire race world and this city that was born on four wheels.
Car Gatherings: Everything From Mega Events to Super Chill Hanging Out
It’s time here for an absolute powerhouse on the calendar which is the LA Auto Show held November 20–29, 2026 at the LA Convention Center. Shiny next-gen models, revolutionary concepts, and many cars you actually can fit yourself in to, can certainly be expected. One of my happier and most loved memories, however. There, in that atmosphere of relaxed atmosphere for everyone, where the audience members come together for fun and get down close and personal together to really get involved.
Supercar Sunday - 7 to 10 a.m., every Sunday morning, down in Woodland Hills near Pierce College - is a crazy blend of European exotics and American classics, with plenty of fun and thrills.
And don’t forget Friday nights when Bob’s Big Boy parking lot in Burbank takes on the appearance of vintage Americana, complete with hot rods, custom builds and an abundance of nostalgia that gives you goosebumps. They are precisely the local watering holes precisely why so many of us fell in love with cars in the first place - the relationships, stories shared, the sensation of never being stuck merging onto the 405.
Making it On the Road: Scenic Drives and Smart Rental Deals
Sometimes, real LA experience is making up your mind to ditch the regular grid and do something for more than the regular grid itself. Get that convertible squared away, Fire up the muscle car, or hell, make sure to try a decent SUV capable of canyon carving.
The established routes never lose their charm: PCH for a cooling, salty ocean mist blowing through your hair; Mulholland Drive, spiraling high through the Santa Monica Mountains. Those views are downright breathtaking; or if the temperature hits rock bottom, roll up to the Angeles Crest Highway (CA Route 2), where the road skates and cuts through the wide, expansive coverage of San Gabriel.
A quick tip for the enthusiasts: if you’re scouting for a classic project or a performance Chevy, a quick Chevy VIN decoder check can save you from costly surprises down the road by verifying original parts and history. That can add just sixty seconds, costs zero dollars, and is one way to avoid ownership surprises that can be really painful down the road.
Mastering the Art of an Actually Enjoyable Car Day

Don't overthink your schedule, but definitely do some. Be willing to miss the most serious craziness during rush hours - morning or afternoon are the worst - because it feels like the jackpot has landed.
Bring yourself the essentials: water, some good snacks, some rock-star music from somewhere. Still, most of these recommended excursions will spontaneously skirt the typical tourist snarls.
Check the modern-day hours and entrance fee of a museum before opening it - those giant temp exhibits can become things like shoulder-to-shoulder. And sure, bring along your best-looking phone or camera, since those canyon sunset views are some of the gold you will want to cherish forever.
The ultimate advice: When driving, do your best to be cautious, treat the road with respect and remember to always look out for your fellow motorists. That is how these amazing experiences remain fantastic for decades to come.
When you step back and examine everything, cars in Los Angeles are anything but the sum of their functionality. They are the DNA of freedom, the DNA of culture, that singular, disquieting energy giving birth to this whole place.
So the next available weekend when you have time for it, give up the boring, predictable route. Go to the Petersen, drop into a low-key local meet, or rent something jangly and drive home the longest way. You will come back feeling new, with a small handful of great new stories to tell, and I promise you will be smiley, ear to ear.
Drive happy, LA & always appreciate the road.
