4 Tips on Coping With Cancer as a Veteran

WELLNESS

VETERAN WELLNESS - Many different things inspire Americans who join the military. Some improve themselves physically and psychologically, or receive certain training or education. Some could be looking to contribute their skills and resources to be part of something greater than themselves. They could also join to guarantee the safety and well-being of every American and for the love of the country.

Many people entering the service may not be aware that they frequently pick up priceless abilities, qualities, and life lessons they would not have imagined. Even those who have not been on duty for decades, veterans afflicted with cancer, often call on the fortitude, will, and other qualities and talents they acquired during their days in uniform to battle their new foe. Here are tips on coping with cancer as a veteran.

Summon Your Perseverance and Grit

Patients can be proactive in cancer treatment and care using perseverance and grit. These two traits might enable patients to be informed, inquire, and actively participate in their treatment planning. Cancer sufferers may experience empowerment and control.

Many patients receive months or sometimes years of cancer treatment. It might be tough to keep on through sometimes challenging treatments. Many veterans, driven by recollections of conquering difficult situations, may find solace in their military experience in such times.

Navy veterans and mesothelioma diagnoses are common, as exposure to asbestos was prevalent in naval ships. The discipline and resilience learned in the Navy can help mesothelioma patients navigate their treatment journey with strength and determination.

Lean On Your People and Don’t Lose Faith

Even when dealing with a challenging cancer experience, many people may find it difficult to rely on others or seek assistance. Support networks are beneficial for comfort and motivation, regardless of their size. Everyone experiences difficult days, but navigating the cancer journey while still leading a normal life may be rather difficult. Accepting assistance, particularly during treatment, gives the body the time and space to recover and keep healing.

You may be able to replenish your strength and energy to continue working toward your health objectives by relying on family, friends, and caretakers. Faith-based patients may also seek spiritual support following a cancer diagnosis.

Evaluate How You Are Coping

Spend some time reflecting on yourself. Consider how you are handling things. Some people immediately ask the tough questions, do extensive study on their disease, and gain a thorough awareness of the gravity of their ailment and available treatment options. This method aids in your mental adaptation to your situation.

The reality is too much for some people. Despite its difficulties, denial frequently has advantages. Although it may appear to be avoidance, this is also a coping strategy. It acts as a buffer against the truth, preventing you from feeling overwhelmed. Taking things one step at a time lets you gradually accept your sickness.

Keep Growing

Cancer offers a special chance for development. You could go through a process of reconsidering your objectives and values to find out what counts to you. This experience does not suggest that cancer is deserved or a required lesson. Rather, it's about appreciating the unanticipated improvements that might occur even in disease.

From this vantage point, you might value events with loved ones, support causes near and dear, or just enjoy what you have. It could also entail working for more honesty and authenticity while appreciating the latent facets of your personality.

Endnote

Whatever gave you comfort before you were diagnosed with cancer, whether it be a close friend, a religious figure, or a favorite pastime that helps you refuel, is probably going to help soothe your fears now.  While you can use these strategies, don't be afraid to attempt new coping mechanisms.
