ALPERN AT LARGE - One of the greatest failures of the G.W. Bush Administration is that he focused on Iraq and not Iran in his War on Global Terror. Iran was a much greater threat with respect to Israel, Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis, and a host of other lesser-known dangerous groups throughout the Middle East and Planet Earth.
And then danged if Obama and now Biden decided to “play nice” with Iran in the hopes they wouldn’t continue work on a nuclear bomb.
For those of us who remember and give a damn about the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre of the Israeli team, the timing of Hezbollah’s bombing of a soccer field and killing a dozen kids (Jewish and Druze) cannot be ignored.
There’s a reason why Trump—who moved the American Embassy to Jerusalem after decades of an unfulfilled American promise, and who economically starved Iran and created the Abraham Accords—is quiet popular in Israel and Biden is decidedly NOT.
Forget about Netanyahu and how much so many Americans resent him, and Israelis resent him, in times of peace but now Israel is at WAR.
A war which WE helped pay for, and thereby create.
The money which Iran has under President Biden’s watch can and will be a 2024 talking point, because the politics of America being a net oil producer/exporter, and starving out Russia and Iran’s own oil exports, did keep Putin and the Iran Ayatollahs with limited resources to export violence and terror.
Then Biden ended all that.
Hezbollah WILL get a strong Israeli military response, and no doubt innocent Lebanese (who tolerate and/or have to endure Hezbollah at Iran’s insistence) will suffer.
Which is what Hezbollah wants, and they will downplay the intentional massacre of children that started it all.
As with the PLO who diverted and disrupted the 1972 Olympics, it’s Hezbollah and their Iranian sponsors who are now doing the same in 2024.
Not a whole lot from either Biden or Harris about this soccer field bombing, because clearly they want everyone to lay low during the Olympics.
But Israel does NOT lay low when their civilians are intentionally attacked.
We’ll see where the “spin” takes us all, and we’ll see whether Hezbollah or Israel gets the blame for “ruining the Olympics” in 2024.
But can we at least recognize that Hezbollah and Iran started all this?
And that the United States helped fund this?
And that the timing of this soccer field/soccer kid bombing was NOT a coincidence?
