One was directed at Van Gogh Elementary School, while the other was filed by concerned area residents, both citing noxious odors emanating from the landfill.
However, the frustrations of these communities have been compounded by a controversial decision made by the City Council. The council, led by Councilman John Lee, voted to divert funds away from the Sunshine Canyon Trust—a program aimed at mitigating the adverse effects of the landfill on the surrounding neighborhoods—and towards a contentious police license plate scanner project. This move has ignited outrage among residents who feel betrayed by their elected officials.
Adding fuel to the fire is the timing of Councilman Lee's motion.
