LMU Presents 'Much Ado About Nothing'

Loyola Marymount University’s seventh Shakespeare on the Bluff summer festival features performances of “Much Ado About Nothing” June 20-22 and “Troilus & Cressida” July 18-20.

The popular, free, and family-friendly event is presented by LMU’s College of Communication and Fine Arts and Theatre Arts program. As Shakespeare wrote in “Much Ado About Nothing” — “the world must be peopled!” — everyone is invited to enjoy these timeless tales at the outdoor Drollinger Family Stage in Lawton Plaza on the Westchester campus.

“We’re thrilled to be back in front of audiences with free live performances of Shakespeare, featuring both student and professional performers,” said Kevin Wetmore, professor of theatre arts and artistic director of Shakespeare on the Bluff. “This summer, we present a fun family comedy and a rarely seen dark war drama. “Much Ado About Nothing” is always a riot, and with its mix of clever and silly characters, will delight the whole family. “Troilus and Cressida” is a difficult play about love during the Trojan War, featuring an exciting and diverse cast.”

LMU CFA Dean Bryant Keith Alexander added: “I am excited to welcome our faithful audiences from the LMU campus, Westchester, and Playa Vista, along with our ever-growing visitors from around Los Angeles, to our beautiful campus. ‘Shakespeare on the Bluff’ has become a wonderful community engagement that explores both the critical and creative that comes with our productions of the Bard and permeates throughout the College of Communication and Fine Arts.”

All shows begin at 8 p.m. and are roughly 90 minutes long. Low lawn chairs and picnics on the lawn are welcome; the doors open at 6 p.m. Registration is encouraged, but not required.

Shakespeare’s beloved comedy involves misunderstandings, needlessly complex schemes, and things overheard. Young soldier Claudio and fair Hero fall in love, but when villain Don John plots to besmirch her reputation and ruin their marriage, it takes an entire village, including their witty friends Beatrice and Benedict, her wise father, and a group of well-meaning but none-too-bright watchmen, to unmask the villains, reunite the lovers, and save the day.

“Troilus & Cressida,” directed by Kevin Wetmore
July 18-20, 2024, 8 p.m.
“Troilus and Cressida” is Shakespeare’s story of love and relationships during the Trojan War. Agamemnon has brought the Greeks to recapture Helen of Troy, bringing with him Menelaus, Ulysses, Ajax, and other Greek princes to battle with the princes of Troy: Hector, Aeneus, and young Troilus, who is in love with Cressida. But when Cressida is traded to the Greeks as part of an exchange, he sneaks into the Greek camp to learn that all is horrible in love and war. A bitter play about war and relationships and how we cope with learning that reality does not match our ideals, presented in a gender-reversed production.

62nd Annual Armed Forces Day Parade and Celebration Returns to Torrance

 

The City of Torrance is proud to announce the 62nd Annual Armed Forces Day Parade and Celebration will take place Friday, May 17 through Sunday, May 19. Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday of May each year and celebrates all six branches of the United States Military under the U.S. Department of Defense.

This year the United States Space Force receives the honorary military branch distinction with Lieutenant General Philip A. Garrant serving as the Grand Marshal of the Armed Forces Day Parade. Lt. Gen. Garrant is Commander of U.S. Space Force’s Space Systems Command, headquartered at Los Angeles Air Force Base in El Segundo, California. Space Systems Command is responsible for supplying our Nation, allies, and warfighters with critical timely and resilient space-based capabilities. This is critical because they close the key gaps that create vulnerability, timely because our pacing challenges are working faster to take over our Nation’s place in space, and resilient because emergency threats demand it. Our military, our Nation and our allies rely on the Space Force to deliver the space-based capabilities that protect our Nation, enable our critical infrastructures, and fuel our economy. Also joining Lt. Gen. Garrant to lead the parade are Honorary Grand Marshal, Michael Hopkins, retired U.S. Space Force Col. and former NASA Astronaut, and Senior Ranking Flag Officer, Col. Mia L. Walsh, Commander, Space Base Delta 3 (SBD 3), Los Angeles Air Force Base.

Torrance Mayor George K. Chen said, “This cherished tradition not only honors the bravery and sacrifice of our Armed Forces, but also unites us in gratitude and patriotism. Let us pay tribute to our heroes that protect us worldwide courageously and celebrate the spirit of resilience that defines our great City!”

Torrance is one of the few cities nationwide sanctioned by the Department of Defense to honor our Armed Forces through an annual Armed Forces Day Parade and Celebration. The three day celebration includes a military exhibit, military concert, special flyover surprises, 5K For Freedom, and the highly anticipated parade along Torrance Boulevard. Last call: The Fountain Theatre has announced the second extension of its world premiere hit play, Fatherland. Audiences have been mesmerized since February by the riveting true story of the 19-year-old son who testified against his father in federal court after informing the FBI of his dad’s involvement in the Jan 6 attack on the Capitol. Following a three-week hiatus, the production will return for an additional five weeks of performances from June 22 through July 21. On Wednesday, May 15 at 9:30 AM, the City of Los Angeles Planning Department will hold a virtual public hearing about the redevelopment of Television City, the former historic CBS Studios, at Beverly and Fairfax.
 
The main purpose of the hearing is to collect feedback from the public, and we urge you to call in and speak about the impacts of this massive project on our community.
 
Just as importantly, we urge you to communicate with our City Councilmember, Katy Yaroslavsky, to let her know that our neighborhood is concerned about the harm this mega-development will do to our community. 
 
HERE ARE THE FACTS:
 
TV City will be TWICE THE SIZE OF THE STAPLES CENTER. It doesn’t need to be. This is an office complex masquerading as a production studio.
 
The developer, Hackman Capital, has proposed a 1.7 million square foot studio project which is just 25% studio and 75% office compound. It has been advertised as a world-class studio. In reality, the new development would be a massive office complex with a small studio attached.
 
While some of the TVC office space is designated for studio use, 550,000 square feet is general office space that has no relation to production. Our community does not need a huge office complex and should not bear the burden of the added disruption and congestion it will cause, including a jitney making dozens of trips daily on Orange Grove to and from the new Metro Purple Line Subway stop near Wilshire and Fairfax.
