SAN DIEGO, Calif., (October 12, 2021) –  San Diego County Credit Union® (SDCCU®), one of California’s largest locally-owned financial institutions, is going one on one with cyber security expert Jim Stickley with an interactive interview on Wednesday, October 20, 2021 from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. (PT). Stickley will offer an inside look into various methods of cyber attacks that criminals use and detail how to reduce your risk by showing examples of real cases and tips to be aware of to avoid becoming victim. Given the current environment, he will specifically focus on current threats relating to coronavirus, including scam emails and phone calls from the IRS, phishing emails appearing to come from a co-worker, friend or family member, malicious COVID-19 mobile apps and more.

 

Stickley has stolen credit cards, hacked Social Security numbers, robbed banks, created fake ATMs, broken into armed government facilities and stolen from teenagers. Fortunately for all victims involved, Jim is a cyber security expert with over 20 years in the industry who was hired to perform these attacks by corporations testing their security and agencies interested in knowing just how easy it is to commit identity theft. His job is to find security flaws before the real criminals find them and help educate people as well as organizations about what they can do to protect themselves.

Today, Stickley is the CEO of Stickley on Security and can be seen throughout the United States speaking on topics that range from basic identity theft to national cyber terrorism. In addition, Stickley can be seen on numerous TV news programs, is a frequent guest on NBC's Today Show and is the security expert featured in Life Lock® infomercials.

How to Apply for a Cannabis License

As a reminder, over the last several months, the DCR Licensing Portal has been undergoing system updates to allow DCR to implement and streamline significant procedural and land-use amendments adopted by the City Council in July 2021.  Specifically, these amendments modified licensing procedures regarding the Pre-Application Review process and Temporary Approval Process.

To begin the application process to engage in one of the above-listed activities, applicants will first need to complete the Pre-Application Review Process. Once an Applicant completes the Pre-Application Review Process and the proposed business premises is determined to be eligible for further processing, an Applicant may apply for Temporary Approval. Both application processes must be completed online via the DCR Licensing Portal; click here to APPLY.

Please note that policy amendments made by the City Council necessitated changes to most forms, documents, bulletins, and other public resources maintained and utilized by DCR and DCR stakeholders.

  • The LACMA booth will showcase the Obama Portraits Tour and Black American Portraits exhibitions opening November 7. Get an art kit with a portrait-making activity and art supplies (while supplies last). And take your picture in front of the portrait wall.

To navigate the streets safely, make sure you read our Rules of the Route. Our events allow people-powered transportation: skates, bikes, skateboards, scooters, and your own feet. (Or you can visit a Hub on its own.) Motorized vehicles aren't allowed, except for participants with disabilities. Many types of e-bikes are allowed – learn more here.

You're sharing the road with others who may be walking or biking or taking a selfie, so be mindful and maintain a safe speed. And wear a helmet! (If you're under 18, it's the law.) At the Chinatown Hub, CHP will be giving out free helmets for anyone under 18, while supplies last. And our partners Spin at MacArthur Park and El Centro de Ayuda at Mariachi Plaza, will be giving away helmets as well – for all ages.

We're closely following LA County Public Health guidelines as we approach the event. We encourage everyone to bring a mask – whether to wear on the route or to be prepared for indoor places (public transit or restaurants & shops along the route) that require masking for everyone.

October 2 and 3: Women’s March + Remember Rosie Jiménez
 
 
Two reproductive rights campaigns have staked out the first weekend in October for actions around the country to defend abortion rights.
 
Beginning in July, when the U.S. Supreme Court announced it would hear a Mississippi challenge to Roe vs. Wade, which secured the right to legal abortion, feminist organizations began planning coordinated actions for Sunday, October 3rd. On that day in 1977, Rosaura “Rosie” Jiménez died of an unsafe abortion in McAllen, Texas after the Hyde Amendment cut off abortion funding for people who received federally subsidized medical care.
 
Then in early September, after the high court declined to halt a Texas law outlawing abortions after six weeks, Women's March organizers in Washington, DC announced Saturday, October 2nd as a day of action.
 
“We see the two days of action as complementary,” says Miriam Padilla, a Radical Women member who is helping build a National Mobilization rally and march in Seattle. “What sets the October 3 mobilization apart are our strong demands for the full intersectional meaning of reproductive justice and our emphasis on honoring Rosie Jiménez and other women of color and marginalized people who are the most at risk of injury and death when abortion is not available.” The October 3 actions range from in-person rallies and marches to virtual film screenings and forums.
 
When she died, Jiménez was a 27-year-old Chicana college student and mother of a four-year-old daughter. She lived on less than $100 a month and was determined to finish school. Abortion was not covered by her Medicaid health coverage and she couldn’t afford to pay out-of-pocket. She was forced into an unsafe abortion by an untrained midwife and died of infection. She is the first known fatality as a result of the Hyde Amendment’s cutoff of funds.
 
Jiménez story is especially poignant in light of recent legislation in her home state of Texas that bans abortion after six weeks and rewards citizens who sue health providers and any who “aid” the person in obtaining an abortion. Texas’s law is currently the harshest in the country, but other states including Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, and Montana have passed similarly restrictive abortion laws.
 
At a recent rally in New York City, National Mobilization organizer Nga Bui addressed the uneven impact of bans on abortion: “Rosie’s story is not unique. It exposes how the system controls working-class and poor women, trans and non-binary folks. We need a mass movement to defend reproductive justice.”
 
The National Mobilization for Reproductive Justice was initiated by Radical Women and endorsed to date by two dozen groups and unions from across the country. Supporters call for: protecting and expanding Roe v. Wade — safe, legal abortion on demand without apology; repealing the Hyde Amendment; overturning state barriers to reproductive choices; stopping forced sterilization; preventing caged kids, forced assimilation, and child welfare abuses; ending medical and environmental racism — for universal healthcare; defending queer and trans families; guaranteeing medically sound sex education and affordable childcare; and upholding social progress with expanded voting rights and strong unions.
 
Actions for the October 3 National Mobilization for Reproductive Justice are happening in 11 cities. Endorsers hail from nine states, including five union locals and labor groups, three chapters of the National Organization for Women, a clinic defense group, several socialist organizations, Oregon Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, New Mexico Coalition for Reproductive Choice, and the Washington Poor People’s Campaign. The HPIFF showcase includes 1 Narrative Feature, 4 Documentary Features and 25 Shorts. These include 9 World Premieres and 3 LA Premieres.

This year’s festival also includes - Film Fan Fest - a free event which takes place outside of the Highland Theater and includes music, dancing and live painting by Highland Park artists as an outreach component. This year DJ Ama B will provide live music Al Fresco Red Carpet on Figueroa.

Opening night is Friday October 1st and following the red carpet, there will be a screening of the feature documentary “Carlos Almaraz, Playing with Fire” directed by Elsa Flores Almaraz and Richard Montoya. The film explores the life of Carlos Almaraz, a Chicano activist, sexual outlaw, and visionary painter of some of the most unforgettable images of Southern California.  A special mention will be made since the Highland Theater is directly across the street from the old Centro de Arte Popular that Carlos Almaraz co-founded and because it was recently approved by The Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission to the city's list of Historic-Cultural Monuments as a location important to the Chicano Arts Movement.

 

Directly before the screening, HPIFF will present the 2021 HPIFF Humanitarian Award to Juan Escobedo.  A son of East Los Angeles, Juan uses film and photography to portray issues in society such as domestic violence, HIV prevention, and human trafficking. With the support of nonprofits in Boyle Heights, East LA and Watts, he creates films depicting characters and communities affected by these issues. Juan founded the East LA Society of Film & Arts (TELASOFA) in 2005, a nonprofit which heals children and their families through art and film. Three years later he also started the East LA Film Festival (ELAFF) where youth could showcase their films alongside Hollywood professionals. After 14 years, ELAFF has grown with the help of the East LA community screening films from Australia, Asia, Europe, Middle East, Mexico, USA and his beloved East LA. Juan directed the award-winning short film “Marisol”, based on a true story about a little girl from East LA who dreams of the perfect quinceañera dress until her life takes a drastic turn after an incident with domestic violence.  The film too the  “Arts and Culture Award” from the East LA Women’s Center, Hollywood Reel Independent Festival “Best Drama” and qualified for the Oscars in 2018. The script is now in the OSCARS ACADEMY Margaret Herrick Library available for research to filmmakers and the public. Juan continues to work with young adults with a grant from Eastside Arts Initiative to provide internships on projects produced by TELASOFA. One of his next projects is BLAXICAN, about an aged out foster youth dealing with generational trauma. He is also in pre-production for CRY LADY, CRY! A film about professional mourners called moirologists.

Closing night is Saturday October 2nd with the screening of the feature film “Lorelei” directed by Sabrina Doyle. A working-class fable about a biker, a mermaid and three shades of blue starring Jena Malone and Pablo Schreiber.  Directly after the screening, there will be a question and answer with Sabrina Doyle, Writer/Director, Stephen Paar, Cinematographer and Arnold and Jianulla Zimmerman, Executive Producers who will be in attendance.

Awards will be held directly after the screening. Awards will be given for Best Narrative Feature, Best Documentary Feature, Best Short Film, Best Documentary Short, Best Cinematography, Best Musical Composition, Audience Awards and Honorable Mentions.

This report is from MissionSquare Research Institute(formerly the Center for State and Local Government Excellence at ICMA-RC).
 
It finds that as schools begin to open across the nation amid growing concerns about the COVID-19 Delta variant, the K-12 workforce is more stressed, burnt out and anxious compared to other state and local employees. More than one-third (37%) of the K-12 workforce says that the pandemic has them considering a job change.
 
K-12 employees are concerned about the impact of the pandemic on students — from falling behind in their education to experiencing problems with access to the internet and technology. This segment of the workforce also is feeling the financial pain of the pandemic more acutely than other state and local workers.
