Campaign Crunch Time

ARCHIVE

ELECTION WATCH 2015-It’s crunch time for all the spring political campaigns. The number of absentee ballot voters is nearly half or the majority of votes received for each campaign and the vote-by-mail ballots are scheduled to begin mailing out on February 2, 2015.

The campaigns now have less than two weeks to tell their story to as many vote-by-mail voters as possible. Ideally, the campaigns have identified their target voters, crafted their message, and have been calling and knocking on their doors.  Plus, the campaigns should be preparing to send their first mailer, if they have the funding, to land in the mailboxes of absentee voters. And, in the modern era of campaigns they should be posting ads on micro news sites and blogs.

Finally, the candidates have attended many meetings with potential voters, participated in forums (no one does debates these days), filled out many questionnaires and sat in front of panelists interviewing them for endorsements, and attended political party endorsement meetings where the task is to preserve, prevent or secure an endorsement, because endorsements can have some influence voters.

There is a lot to campaigning and what I have shared is only a portion of the experience. It is hard work with little sleep and lots of ups and downs, but inspiring and affirming, if you truly believe in public service.

The campaign season has begun in earnest, and soon voters will begin paying attention, so it is crunch time for getting your story in front of voters. As you tell your story, remember it is not about you, but how you can make a positive impact on the franchised and the disenfranchised.
