LA’s Irreverent Marketplace Show Celebrates 25th Year on Nov 8 … Amy Poehler, Norman Lear Featured, You’re Invited

MEDIA POLITICS-For 25 years, Los Angeles- based business and economics radio show Marketplace has brought economics to life every day for millions of listeners across the country.  Known for its irreverent and conversational approach to the business and economic news of the day, Marketplace's studio is located on Figueroa Boulevard in downtown. 

Produced in association with the University of Southern California, Marketplace programs (Marketplace, Marketplace Weekend, Marketplace Morning Report and Marketplace Tech Report) are heard by more than 10 million listeners across the country each week.  Not to mention, Marketplace, the franchise’s signature program hosted by Kai Ryssdal every weekday evening, is the largest business news program, on radio or TV, in the U.S. 

Founded in 1989, Marketplace began with only four full-time employees and today, boasts more than 50.  Upon its inception, the show's founders decided to break with tradition and be based in LA, covering the financial industry from an off off-Wall Street locale. Marketplace is the only daily national business news program originating from the West Coast. 

When the show first began, the world of business and money was the sole preserve of the financial elite. Over the years, Marketplace sought to change that thinking and has armed its listeners with the business knowledge –and economic intelligence—to advance their own personal economy by understanding the global economy.  Each day, Marketplace takes a look behind the numbers that shape our lives and brings the most important economic and business news to life, with expertise, insight and irreverence.   

In celebration of its milestone anniversary, Marketplace has taken its show on the road to Washington, D.C., Cleveland, Houston, New York, and Chicago. This week, it wraps up its national tour with a grand finale here in its hometown with an evening of creativity, commerce, and conversation titled “How I Learned the Business of Creativity,” Saturday, November 8 at UCLA’s Royce Hall.

Presented in partnership with KPCC and hosted by Ryssdal, the program will take a deep dive into the business of organizational and institutional innovation as well as individual creativity with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars and Los Angeles’ most successful innovators. 

Special guests include: Amy Poehler, star of NBC’s Parks and Recreation; Gwynne Shotwell, COO of aerospace tech  company SpaceX; Norman Lear, legendary TV producer; and Franklin Leonard, founder of The Black List, a yearly publication highlighting Hollywood’s most popular unproduced screenplays. 

The live show will feature in-depth interviews, fascinating stories, and fresh perspectives— just the way Marketplace looks at the numbers each day for millions of listeners across the country, but on November 8, they’ll do it in person in Los Angeles.
