PORTER RANCH-Termo oil company is trying to get approval to drill 12 new oil wells in Aliso Canyon, right in the backyard of Porter Ranch and Chatsworth. In addition to many homes, there are several schools in the immediate area. We are very concerned about the potential negative effects of oil drilling and fracking. Fracking, or hydraulic fracturing, is a technique that uses a high volume of water, chemicals and high pressure to break up rock to release natural gas and oil.
Fracking and Oil Drilling near residences and schools – Causes for Concern:
● Can Negatively affect property values
● Evidence for multiple health problems – headaches, nosebleeds, respiratory illness, infertility, miscarriage, cancer
● Massive use of our water during historical drought, thus making less water available to residents and leading to higher water rates
● Earthquakes. Fracking has been shown to trigger earthquakes. There is a major fault line in the San Fernando Valley, and it is believed that there are many undiscovered faults in and around our area, making fracking especially risky here
● Potential contamination of ground water, and potential toxic contamination of land
● Cancer causing pollutants from the drilling site may spread to surrounding communities via the Santa Ana winds
SavePorterRanch, Food and Water Watch, and the residents of Porter Ranch, Northridge, Chatsworth and Granada Hills would like to invite you to attend our Forum event on Saturday August 23, 1-4pm at the Temple Ahavat Shalom, 18200 Rinaldi Place in Porter Ranch (Chimineas and Rinaldi Place, off Rinaldi St).
We will have experts in the field to answer any questions the community may have along with a film explaining the effects of fracking and oil drilling in residential communities. We look forward to seeing you there!
