# Encampments Run Rampant at Rose in Venice

WESTSIDE - Despite the city's best efforts, the encampment situation at Rose and Hampton in the heart of Venice has returned, as several dozen unhoused individuals have taken haven on the property formally known as The Rose Cafe.
The video here shows activity at the site of the restaurant both in front as well as behind the fencing taken earlier this week.
That area formally served as outside dining until it closed it's doors some two years ago.
The truck you see here is full of debris accumulated by those campers who were using the old courtyard for coverage, as the owners of the property try desperately to remove mattresses and other items that had to be removed for sanitary purposes.
The one blue tent seen here was right at the corner of Hampton as efforts to reduce the street population at this particular location have been frustrating.
Local sources claim that the fact the Rose Cafe has been dormant and empty has become a magnet for encampments, and the lack of security has allowed campers behind the fencing and disguises the actual number of those camped out.
Locals believe the property needs round-the-clock security to ensure this corner stays safe from the onslaught of those looking to camp here knowing the structure is empty.
Maintenance crews often return 48 hours after a major sweep, to ensure sidewalk access is available for those unhoused in wheelchairs and for the general public.
LA City officials are aware of the conditions as this retaking of Rose of sorts is a blow to the efforts by Mayor Karen Bass to keep this particular location clean and clear.
The restaurant is no longer open, and It officially closed December 15, 2024 after about 45 years in business.
The actual facility still exists at the same location in Venice, and the land/building owner is separate from the former restaurant operators.
