LA Getting Fresh & Easy

ARCHIVE

PLANNING LA - Fresh & Easy is aggressively expanding into every corner of LA and is in the final stages of entitlements for several proposed stores within the city limits.

According to a LandUseLA.com review of applications submitted by the British-based food retailer, Fresh & Easy has five stores in the late-stages of entitlement requests, from the Valley to Mid-City to San Pedro. If opened, they will give Fresh & Easy 12 stores in LA and 182 stores across the Southwest US.

The Valley has two Fresh & Easy stores in the works. The Tujunga-Sunland branch has a public hearing on Monday for its request for signage exceptions to the Foothill Boulevard Corridor Specific Plan. The store also needs a standard Conditional Use to allow the sale of beer and wine.

The store at Coldwater Canyon & Sherman Way is already hiring, with an announced opening expected soon.

One week from Wednesday, the public will get its first look at what Fresh & Easy Buzz [link] calls a Fresh & Easy Market Express. The first-of-its-kind store is proposed for San Pedro at the corner of W. 6th Street and Gaffey Street (713 W. 6th St.). The ZA hearing is for the Conditional Use for the 4,000-5,000 square-feet store, half the size of the typical 10,000 square-feet for Fresh & Easy stores.

Last Wednesday, a public hearing was held for Fresh & Easy’s proposed Mid City store at 1788 S. La Cienega Blvd. Fresh & Easy is proposing to replace an existing used car lot with one of its large-format stores.

In February, Fresh & Easy got a lot of headlines when it announced a plan to build one of its stores in South Central LA proposal at the corner of Jefferson & Crenshaw Blvds. That project is still waiting for its entitlements after its initial approval was appealed in July.
