Water Conservation Levels Near 25%

Be Green - Continuing to embrace water conservation as a way of life in Los Angeles, single-family residential customers of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power used 24% less water in February 2011, when compared to the same month in 2007.

Water use in February was also down citywide as customers across all sectors achieved a 17% reduction, far exceeding the initial goal of 10% set in July 2007, when Mayor Villaraigosa first urged Angelenos to conserve.

"This is a powerful example of how the community of Los Angeles pulls together when we need to,” said Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. “Two years ago we asked Angelenos to help us conserve water and you responded beyond our expectations. I applaud the people of Los Angeles for putting the needs of our city, our planet and our next generation first."

Since June 2009, when Mandatory Water Conservation took effect in the City of LA, Angelenos have saved more than 70 billion gallons – more than one-third of what Los Angeles uses in one year.

“Our customers continue to lead the way in water conservation in California.  In a month where water use is typically low, our customers’ success in reducing their water use for 43 straight months is truly remarkable,” said James McDaniel, Senior Assistant General Manager of the LADWP Water System. “Our customers continue to save water that is being used to help refill storage reservoirs in California and the West. There is no doubt that this year's snow in the Eastern Sierra has improved our water supply, but a great year of snowfall is not enough to make up for the years of average and below average rain and snowfall. Through continued conservation, we permanently reduce our water supply needs.”

Under the current outdoor watering schedule, customers with street addresses ending in an odd number are allowed to water on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, while those with addresses ending in an even number are allowed to water on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Outdoor watering is prohibited between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. and all other prohibited uses of water in the Water Conservation Ordinance remain in effect.
