Gladys Knight first rose to fame with Motown group The Pips in the early 1960s and went on to deliver enduring classics including “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” and “Midnight Train to Georgia.” Over a six-decade career spanning pop, gospel, R&amp;B, film, and television, Knight has recorded more than 38 albums and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024.

Smokey Robinson, legendary frontman of the Miracles and one of Motown’s defining songwriters, helped shape generations of soul music with hits such as “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me” and “I Second That Emotion.” Robinson also wrote and produced songs for artists including the Temptations and Marvin Gaye and remains an enduring figure in American music and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

community in celebration of Mental Health Awareness MonthMy Community Health Fair presents the 4th annual DTLA Spring Health Fair on Saturday, May 16, at Lafayette Park.

What distinguishes this health fair is its main objective: to offer “Meaningful health screenings beyond the standard blood pressure checkup.” We focus on health screenings that make a real difference in people’s lives and may save lives.”

Every year, the DTLA Spring Health Fair brings together more than 25 healthcare organizations, many with their Mobile Units (a medical office on wheels) to offer free eye exams and eyeglasses, dental exams, cancer screenings, general health screenings, and educational workshops for people of all ages.

Workshops include maintaining a healthy lifestyle, promoting mental health awareness, understanding nutritional information, and recognizing the early signs of health issues. Attendees will also be able to receive assistance in signing up for Medi-Cal, Medicare, and other public health services.

My Community Health Fair was created to bring essential health services directly to the community. As we celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month this May, My Community Health Fair is proud to continue its mission of supporting both physical and mental wellness for families in Southern California.

Yearly, the fair continues to grow attracting well over 3,000 attendees and is open not only to the Los Angeles area but also to counties such as the Inland Empire and Riverside. Just last year, thanks to the services provided, many women were able to have early detection of illnesses, showcasing the effectiveness of programs like these.

Participating health organizations that provide on-site health screenings that are essential to making this event a one of a kind opportunity for the community.

**THOUSAND OAKS** — Spice lovers, country music fans, and food enthusiasts will gather in Thousand Oaks on Saturday, May 30, for the 9th Annual Old Boney Mountain “Hot Summer Night” International Hot Sauce Competition and OakHeart Country Music Festival.

Presented as a fundraiser benefiting the Old Boney Mountain Foundation for Kids, the all-day event combines live country music, international hot sauce competition tastings, food, drinks, raffles, and family-friendly entertainment.

Hot sauce makers from around the world are invited to participate in the mail-in competition, with entries due by April 24, 2026. Winners from five core divisions will advance to the festival’s People’s Choice “World’s Favorite Hot Sauce” tasting competition, where attendees will help select the overall favorite.

Festivalgoers will also vote for the People’s Choice “World’s Favorite Label,” featuring the competition’s top four hot sauce label designs in a public Instagram voting contest.

Competition winners, including both People’s Choice awards, will be announced during an online awards presentation streamed on YouTube on June 7, 2026.

Organizers say the annual event continues to grow as both a culinary showcase and community fundraiser supporting programs for children through the Old Boney Mountain Foundation for Kids.

**LONG BEACH** — Long Beach Coast Baseball, in partnership with the Long Beach State Dirtbags, will host a free youth baseball clinic for children ages 4–7 at historic Blair Field in Long Beach.

The clinic, titled **“Play Ball With the Pros,”** will introduce young athletes to the fundamentals of baseball through fun, age-appropriate activities led by Long Beach Coast players and coaches. Skills covered include hitting, catching, base running, and fielding. No prior baseball experience or personal equipment is required, as all gear will be provided on site.

The event has already reached full capacity with 150 registered participants, reflecting strong community interest in youth baseball programming. A waitlist remains available online.

Confirmed Long Beach Coast coaches and players include Jerome Williams, Troy Glaus, AJ Crapo, Cooper Vest, Mauricio Aguilar, Conner Gleissner, Steven Ordorica, JJ Almeda, and Nathan Hemmerling. Two activity hubs—Santa Monica Blvd (west of Centinela) and Westwood Blvd (south of Le Conte)—feature family-friendly programming, rest areas, water stations, bike repair, and more. A Pit Stop near Purdue Ave provides additional services.

CicLAvia, inspired by Bogotá’s “ciclovía,” has been transforming LA streets since 2010—encouraging active transportation, supporting local businesses, and fostering community connection across neighborhoods.

**NOTE:**
Only people-powered transportation is permitted. Certain e-bikes are allowed with restrictions. Participants assume all risks.
