## [ Free Westside Thanksgiving Dinner & Celebration](https://mail.citywatchla.com/events/11896-free-westside-thanksgiving-dinner-celebration "Free Westside Thanksgiving Dinner & Celebration")

Details CityWatch [FRONT PAGE EVENTS](https://mail.citywatchla.com/events) October 03 2016 Free Westside Thanksgiving Dinner & Celebration

Dear Angelenos,

We’d like to ask your help in inviting everyone to join us for our FREE Thanksgiving Dinner and Celebration. Please share this with other agencies and social service providers so every needy person gets an invitation.

- Thanksgiving Day at the VA Greater Los Angeles Health Care System campus in West LA (Wilshire/Sepulveda in West Los Angeles)).
- The event starts at 9am.
- Dinner is served from 11am-2pm.
- Children’s Carnival is from 9am-noon.
- Free shuttle runs all day from the Wilshire/VA bus stop to the event on

    north campus.
- Free “hat check” to securely store belongings during the event.

Westside Thanksgiving Dinner has been serving the westside since 1982. We prepare a full sit-down Thanksgiving Dinner with all the trimmings, a clothing department with many tons of clothing of all kinds, blankets, hygiene kits, a children's carnival, medical, optical, and dental services, live music, and a resource fair. Everything is free to any and all who come.

What began as a dream in the minds of some college kids at the Vineyard Westside has grown into a westside tradition, bringing together people and organizations of all faiths and creeds: schools, universities, synagogues, churches, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, sports teams, law enforcement, businesses, service clubs, young and old, in the largest event of its kind on the westside. Tens of thousands of volunteers have served over the years, in many cases bridging two and three generations. We've served thousands of people, some poor, many homeless and poor, some far from home; all in need of a family with which to share the giving of thanks for the blessings large and small we enjoy in America.

We know there are now over 45,000 people living on the streets of LA, and many more living in poverty. They need to know there is help for them on Thanksgiving Day. Will you please help us by inviting them to join us.

   ## [ Coastal Cleanup Day - Dockweiler State Beach](https://mail.citywatchla.com/events/11779-coastal-cleanup-day-dockweiler-state-beach "Coastal Cleanup Day - Dockweiler State Beach")

Details CityWatch [FRONT PAGE EVENTS](https://mail.citywatchla.com/events) September 12 2016 **Coastal Cleanup Day Site to Feature Underwater Cleanup on September 17**

*LA Waterkeeper invites volunteers to make the sands of Dockweiler State Beach sparkle*

**WHAT:** While most do their part for Coastal Cleanup Day by removing trash and recyclables from the sand, Los Angeles Waterkeeper takes the endeavor to new depths: underwater. With volunteer divers and nearby workforce who care about their local waters, the offshore/onshore cleanup sets out to clean up one of Los Angeles’ most pollution-prone beaches.

El Segundo residents, AAUS certified divers and regional beach lovers [are invited to join LA Waterkeeper](https://www.eventbrite.com/e/coastal-cleanup-day-2016-tickets-26794757842 "https://www.eventbrite.com/e/coastal-cleanup-day-2016-tickets-26794757842") and employees from Hyperion Water Reclamation for the three-hour event to clean the sand and waters of Dockweiler State Beach.

**WHY:** Thousands of volunteers across California head to the coast to do their part for the world’s largest trash pickup day. LA Waterkeeper asks residents to consider ditching the most popular beach cleanups – which can have more volunteers than necessary – and head to a location that needs the most love and more volunteers.

In addition to its efforts at this cleanup, the dive program at Los Angeles Waterkeeper has been an influential force on the water and in the water—monitoring, protecting and restoring the region’s coastal waters. To learn more about the dive program’s efforts, [click here](https://lawaterkeeper.org/diveprogram/ "https://lawaterkeeper.org/diveprogram/").

**WHO:**

**WHEN:**

Saturday, September 17 from 9 a.m. to noon

**WHERE:**

| In rebellion against the function of art to serve a moral and social purpose in the Victorian period, the Aesthetic movement of late 19th century Britain championed the importance of art divorced from any ulterior motive than its visual beauty. An expression coined by artist James Abbot McNeill Whistler, “art for art’s sake” encompassed the belief that the creation and interpretation of art was the responsibility of the artist, not society, and should be morally disengaged from the outside world. In his book *Ten O’Clock Lecture,* Whistler states, “Nature is very rarely right…”, explaining that it is the artist’s own vision that must improve upon nature. Championing luxury, exoticism, and sensual experience, Aestheticism formed the foundations of early Modern Art with such movements as Art Nouveau, and deeply impacted the fine and applied arts. Exemplary of the Aesthetic Movement’s philosophies, Whistler’s pivotal painting, *La Princesse du pays de la porcelain* (1865) was positioned as a centerpiece of shipping magnate Frederick Leyland’s London house dining room. A space originally designed by architect Thomas Jeckyll to showcase Leyland’s extensive collection of oriental porcelain, Leyland commissioned Whistler to select a color palette and paint in a specified area of the room that would complement both his existing painting and the blue and white porcelain collection. Both Leyland and the architect, trusting in Whistler’s artistic genius, left him unattended to his commissioned task. Excited by the project, the artist went well beyond what was asked of him, transforming the room into an all-encompassing work of art of blue and gold in his patron’s absence. "Well, you know, I just painted on. I went on—without design or sketch—putting in every touch with such freedom…." Whistler believed he had created a masterpiece that would thrill and delight his patron, but when Leyland was presented with Whistler’s bill, he refused to pay, shocked at an exorbitant amount for work that was never requested. After a battle with the artist, the patron agreed to pay half. Infuriated and insulted, Whistler made one more addition to the room, a mural of two peacocks aggressively confronting each other with coins at their feet, to which he attributed two titles—*Art* *and Money* or *The Story of the Room*. The dining room achieved its status as a complete work of art and has since been referred to as *Harmony in Blue and Gold: the Peacock Room*. *Without Design or Sketch: The Story of the Room* approaches the context of the *Peacock Room* as a platform from which to address a series of issues related to contemporary art practices such as the boundary between art space and living space, the perceptions of decorative and fine art, the value of art and patronage, and art’s engagement with social and moral issues versus its purely visual components. The following featured artists engage these concepts within the Launch LA Gallery space and respond to in a dynamic environmental collaboration between artists, ideas, materials, and space. Of all the problems that Angelenos experience, firsthand or otherwise, on a daily basis, perhaps none is as shameful as that of homelessness. Always too large, the region's homeless population has grown amid the housing crisis of recent years. Encampments have taken over some public spaces and hearts break on every street corner. City and county officials have finally pledged to do something about this tragedy. Both the city and the county have devised homelessness plans and are promoting ballot measures that would fund them at least partially.

Has Los Angeles finally found the combination of compassion, political will, and funding to ease this humanitarian crisis? This month at WUF we will discuss the prospects for these plans and learn how the city, county, and other entities intend to turn intention into action. We will unpack the city and county ballot measures, learn where the money will go, meet some of the people leading these efforts, and discuss the plans' impact on land use issues, such as the development of affordable housing. Homelessness has long been a complex problem. This year we may finally find out if urgency can prevail over complexity.

**July 10, 2016**

**WHAT:** 710 Day Celebration in support of the movement to complete the 710 freeway.

**WHEN:** Sunday, July 10, 2016 from 6:00 pm -9:00 pm. Official program is scheduled to begin at 7:10pm.

**WHERE:** Valley Boulevard and Fremont Avenue.

**WHY:** Tunnel supporters will host the fourth annual 710 Day to garner support for the continuing effort to complete the 710 freeway. Local officials and 710 Coalition members will come together to raise awareness about the important benefits of building the tunnel to complete the 710 freeway.

**ABOUT THE PROJECT**

The proposed tunnel will connect the southern terminus of the 710 freeway at Valley Boulevard to the 134 and 210 freeways in Pasadena. For decades, thousands of cars have been forced to use local streets to connect to their destinations because the 710 freeway was never completed. This voter-approved project will have regional benefits including:

- Reduce air emissions and health risks in lower income, minority areas that have been plagued by poor air quality due to severe congestion and slow traffic on neighborhood streets
- Create over 40,000 new jobs

- Move traffic from local streets back onto freeways where it was originally designed to go
- Reduce cut-through traffic on neighborhood streets by 43% (or 57,000 vehicles per day)

Join us at our monthly HOPE meeting for a discussion with the candidates running to represent you on the Park Mesa Heights Neighborhood Council. Neighborhood councils are city-sanctioned organizations of locally-elected stakeholders. City agencies and private developers are required to attend the neighborhood council meetings to inform the community about important changes happening in the area and city. Often, the neighborhood council makes recommendations to the city on these and other matters.
