Protesters will speak to the crowd with Megaphones. **BACKGROUND:** Following the 2015 blowout of the Aliso Canyon Gas Storage Facility in the north San Fernando Valley, demand has been building for the closure of a similar facility, located in the heart of Playa Del Rey. The 90 year old SoCalGas facility threatens the health and safety of the PDR neighborhood and surrounding area, having already been the site of a number of accidents, including a vent stack explosion in 2013 which set flames shooting hundreds of feet into the air. The storage facility sits within and underneath the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve. Environmentalist groups have pointed to a proposed “restoration” project currently being considered for the reserve as an means for SoCalGas to embed new fossil-fuel infrastructure underneath the wetlands, and as being destructive to the reserve’s fragile animal and plant habitat. With a grassroots campaign by the community to shut down the facility growing, local officials have begun to call for action. This group of seniors were purposely misled by the building's owner, Meta Housing Corporation, who claimed that they were protected under affordable housing when in fact Meta Housing has not filed *any* low-income housing paperwork with the city. \\| \\|---\\| \| \|---\| \| \\| \\| \\|---\\| \| \|---\| \| \\| [The Metro](https://latenantsunion.us16.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1d05022fee64f8d5184906274&id=f19a9351a6&e=f4fbc6c9ce) building at 1717 Garfield Pl. is home to seniors on fixed incomes who cannot afford the large rent increase Meta Housing is imposing on them. Despite written requests by the tenants to meet with Meta Housing to negotiate a reasonable rent increase, the owner has refused to respond. Meta Housing rents to a majority of non-monolingual English speakers—including Armenian, Russian, Thai, Korean, and Spanish—yet the owner has refused to communicate in any language other than English. This is not the first time this slumlord has preyed on seniors. In 2018, Meta Housing hiked the rent on seniors living in the Metro building in Chinatown by 8%, which many of the longtime residents could not afford. On Saturday Feb. 1st the tenants of the building will hold a press conference demanding that Meta Housing meet with them and negotiate a fair rent increase. This diverse group of tenants will share their stories and members of the L.A. Tenants will be present in support of their cause.
