#  How Curved Glass Is Adapting Architecture for a Hotter World

As global temperatures rise, architects face an increasingly difficult challenge: creating bright, visually open buildings without allowing excessive heat to enter. At around 32°C (89.6°F), everyday routines can become increasingly dangerous, particularly when high temperatures combine with humidity, direct sunlight, and prolonged exposure. This is known as the [Unlivable Threshold](https://mail.citywatchla.com/planning-watch-la/33045-temperature-increases-are-more-dangerous-than-expensive-gasoline), and temperatures at and above this level are occurring with greater frequency in many parts of the world, increasing the importance of buildings that can provide comfortable, protected indoor environments.

This presents a particular challenge for glass architecture. Large windows provide daylight, views, and a connection with the outdoors, but conventional glazing can also transfer considerable heat. Rather than abandoning transparent architecture, designers are turning to better glazing, custom curved glass, coatings, shading, and careful building orientation to adapt it to a hotter future.

**Why Architects Aren't Abandoning Large Windows**

Large windows remain popular because they create stronger connections between interiors and their surroundings. According to recent studies, advances in glass manufacturing and slimmer, stronger framing systems have enabled architects to use larger panes with fewer visual interruptions, providing more natural daylight and expansive views while creating a seamless relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Curved windows extend these possibilities. Instead of abruptly ending at the corner of a building, glass can wrap around a façade, creating panoramic views and fluid architectural forms. The challenge is therefore not necessarily to reduce glass everywhere, but to make glazing perform more effectively in the climate where it is installed.

**How Modern Curved Glass Is Manufactured**

Creating these flowing forms requires a highly specialized manufacturing process. [BBC Science Focus](https://www.sciencefocus.com/science/how-is-curved-glass-made) details how a sheet of glass is first cut to the required dimensions, cleaned and polished, and checked for impurities that could cause it to break. Manufacturers then construct a steel mold corresponding to the required curve.

The prepared glass and mold are placed in a kiln and heated to approximately 700°C. At this temperature, the glass softens sufficiently to bend and take the shape of the mold. Once the required form has been achieved, it is gradually cooled to produce the finished curved panel.

Modern fabrication techniques allow this process to be combined with other technologies required for architectural applications.

**Customizing Curved Glass for Different Climates**

One of curved glass's greatest advantages is its adaptability. Custom panels can be produced according to a project's dimensions, radius, thickness, appearance, and performance requirements. Depending on the application, curved glass can also form part of laminated or insulated glazing systems. The different applications of curved glass on [Flickinger Glassworks](https://www.flickingerglassworks.com/) show that this flexibility makes the material suitable for dramatically different architectural styles. A contemporary hotel might incorporate enormous curved windows to create uninterrupted views, while custom glass can also be fabricated for a historic building where unusual window shapes must be replicated without undermining its original character.

Customization can similarly respond to climate. Glass intended for an intensely sunny location can incorporate different coatings and glazing configurations from glass installed in a cooler environment.

**Controlling Solar Heat Gain With Advanced Coatings**

Keeping unwanted solar energy outside the building will become increasingly important as cooling demands rise.

A [2026](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-026-46722-4) Nature study, Assessment of Advanced Glazing Systems for Building Energy Efficiency in Hot-Arid Climates, compared different glazing systems under Cairo's hot conditions. Researchers found that solar-control double glazing performed substantially better than ordinary clear glass. In their experiments, solar-control glazing reduced the internal test-chamber temperature by 17°C compared with ordinary clear glass. Simulations also found that replacing conventional clear double glazing with the solar-control system could reduce cooling-energy consumption by approximately 50%.

Low-emissivity coatings and solar-control technologies can limit heat transmission while retaining useful daylight. This means architects do not necessarily have to choose between extensive glazing and thermal performance.

**Can Curved Glass Help Shade Itself?**

The geometry of curved architecture may also become part of the solution. Carefully designed projecting or curved façades can create areas of shade as the sun moves across a building.

However, curvature alone does not make a building energy efficient. Its performance depends on factors including the direction of the curve, latitude, solar angle, surrounding buildings, coatings, and the overall façade design. Computer modeling can help architects determine how a particular curved surface will interact with sunlight throughout the year.

**Reducing Dependence on Blinds Without Losing Daylight**

Traditional blinds solve one problem by creating another. Closing them can reduce glare and solar exposure, but it also blocks daylight and views—the very reasons architects often specify large windows.

High-performance glass offers a more integrated approach. Solar-control coatings can filter part of the incoming solar energy before it reaches the interior. The Scientific Reports research also highlights an important trade-off: stronger solar control can reduce visible-light transmission, meaning glazing must be selected carefully to balance cooling requirements with daylight.

**Curved Insulated Glazing Units**

Insulation provides another layer of defense against outdoor temperatures. Curved insulated glazing units can combine two or more panes separated by a sealed cavity, creating a thermal barrier while preserving the window's distinctive shape.

Research also reviewed in the Scientific Reports study shows that multi-pane construction, Low-E coatings, tints, and gases or other materials within glazing cavities can all contribute to better thermal performance. For architects, combining these technologies with curved fabrication opens the possibility of creating dramatic façades that also contribute to the building envelope's performance.

**The Importance of Building Orientation**

Even sophisticated glass performs best when it is part of a climate-responsive design strategy. Architects must consider where the sun will strike a façade, for how long, and at what angle throughout different seasons.

The amount and orientation of glazing can have a major effect on heat gain. The Scientific Reports study notes that greater window-to-wall ratios increase heat radiation transmitted through a façade. Orientation therefore needs to work alongside coatings, shading, insulation, and the shape of the glass itself rather than being treated as an afterthought.

**Curved Glass Architecture for a Hotter Future**

The curved glass building of the future may look dramatically transparent while behaving very differently from the glass structures of the past. Custom shapes could work alongside insulated glazing, solar-control coatings, intelligent shading, and digital modeling to respond more precisely to local sunlight and temperature.

Future developments in dynamic glazing could push these possibilities further, allowing windows to alter their properties according to environmental conditions. Research into thermo-responsive windows, for example, is examining glazing capable of regulating solar transmission as temperatures change.

As hotter conditions place greater pressure on buildings, architectural glass will have to do more than provide spectacular views. The goal will increasingly be to admit the daylight people value while controlling the heat they don't—allowing curved glass architecture to remain beautiful, transparent, and practical in a warming world.
